She was hooked to the game from an early age. It was almost impossible for Sipora Gurung to remain indifferent to this beautiful game, volleyball, played everywhere around her. She couldn’t escape it at home, where, her elders played it, and at school too it was equally popular among her peers. She grew up watching it. Nobody was surprised when Gurung started taking volleyball lessons at school. She was nine years old then. Three years latter she had learned enough to make a place for herself in the national squad that was to participate in the 10th South Asian Games held in Sri Lanka.

SAG gave her a new perspective as a player. It was an honor for her to brush shoulders with the best in the reason. After returning form Sri Lanka she has been working even harder. She trains for two hours everyday at schools once the classes are over.

Gurung is equally good in athletes and has earned a number of medals at inter-school tournaments and participated in the national games as well. She excels at 200 m. 400m and Long jump events.

However its her success in Volleyball that has made her popular in school. Her principal Chinu Ranabhat says ‘Sipora is the role model of many youngster and her success had resulted in many students enlisting to learn volleyball.’ Gurung is in class ten now and is equally busy preparing for the iron gates. Fish tail Academy, her school in Pokhara, is doing its best to ensure their brilliant student divides her time between games and studies.

She has made her family by being one of the youngest player in the region to participate in SAG and they do not fail to mention it whenever possible. Despite her success so far Gurung is hesitant to say she will make her career in Volleyball. For she knows enough about sports in Nepal and the hardship of players. That’s the reason why she often says Sports is her hobby. She will continue playing for as long as she can. However is aware of the fact that is must focus in her studies for a better life.
