Kathmandu, February 16, NS report –
The 39th executive meeting of South Asian Olympic Council decided to organise the 11th South Asian Games (SAG) from Jan 29-Feb 8 in Bangladesh. The meeting also decided to feature a total of 23 events in the 11th edition of SAG. “The meeting passed a number of decisions which will bring joy to our players and officials,” president of Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) Dhurba Bhadur Pradhan said. “The games popular in Nepal have been added to the list.”
A total of six games - Badminton, cricket, judo, volleyball, cycling and basketball — have been added in the 11th SAG. Bangladesh, the host nation, has added golf and wrestling to the regular sports like athletics, boxing, football, weightlifting, swimming, kabaddi, karate, taekwondo, ushu, shooting, archery, table tennis, squash, handball and hockey.
Jeevan Ram Shrestha, NOC general-secretary and National Sports Council’s member-secretary, said the meetings of South Asian Olympic Council, Olympic Solidarity and Olympic Council of Asia held in Nepal are a great achievement for Nepalese sports. “It will help establish Nepal in the international arena,” he said.
Earlier, a meeting of the South Asian Olympic Committee held in Bangladesh on February 22 last year had decided to organise the games in Dhaka from November-December, 2008. The event was, however, postponed because of the general elections in Bangladesh.
